What to expect when you hire an Organizer?
September 2, 2018 by Nicole
Have you ever wondered if people who hire professional organizers end up becoming a mess again as soon as the organizer leaves?? I've heard that a lot. So here's the most amazing and rewarding part of this work- small changes in behavior make huge differences in how you manage your home, your belongings, and ultimately your life. It isn't about nagging yourself mentally to put everything in it's place and never let a mess arise again- that's completely unrealistic.
Here are a few mindset shifting thoughts I share with clients that may help bring your life in the direction of clarity, organization, and calmness; and away from the chaos and stress, even if you aren't bringing me in to help anytime soon. Although you still probably should... definitely should. We'll get a lot done, wink wink!
1) The purge is powerful!!
The 80/20 rule holds true in home and office organization. We use 20% of our things 80% of the time. Donate, throw out, evaluate each item's worth. If you haven’t used it in the last year, you probably never will. Pass that item on. Think about the space in your home as valuable real estate. If it's not adding value, it's probably time to go.
2) Here's another 20% tip- leave it 20% empty for room to grow! Any clean up project you get into at home should not be finished until you have enough space left in your new tidied area to add more as life grows. When your closets, shelves, and drawers are full and overflowing, you're past due for some re-evaluating of either: your items, the space you're using to store those items, or how you're using that space. Think room to grow or gotta go.
3) Get a quick daily maintenance plan for clutter catching spots like the kitchen counter.
Pick up a LID-LESS basket/bin, place it in your trouble area, and let it be a catch all. At the end of the day take five minutes to carry it around with you and drop things off back where they should go. Think a five minute clean up today saves a 20 minute search tomorrow. Make it easy on yourself.
4) And last, sounds simple but-- raise your personal expectations. A lot of us were told we're lazy or unorganized or unable to take care of our things as youngsters and guess what? Oftentimes we feel a strange expectation of ourselves to honor all that nonsense that's still playing in the background. Not knocking mom and dad but time to give yourself a break, allow the messes to come and go, and remember to think about how much you deserve a beautiful, calming home that serves you and all that you want to do with your precious time.
Hope that helps you maintain whatever work you've done or hired someone else to do, or inspires you to get a project started! Your home is for you, make it work for you!!

Hi! Question for you- how often do you consider how much your time is worth? I’m talking about putting a dollar amount per hour, and not while your on someone else’s payroll.
When we really consider this idea, it adds a lot of meaning to our daily choices. Is this task something I’m choosing because it adds value or is this something I’m doing mindlessly. Is it worth a 20 minute drive for a sale item?
When we pay close attention we may find that the time to work on our most valued goals is actually sitting right there in plain sight, ready for the takin! What could we do with the time spent trying to find something you need? Something we know we have... somewhere... How is the frustration this scenario brings out serving you? If it isn’t, it may be time to delegate!
How much more productive would you be if you knew exactly where every item in your house was? Can you even imagine what that would be like for you?
For most of us the potential to get more done, engage in doing things we love, or even just finally having the extra time to relax at the end of the day.
Time is finite, let’s design your home around you and allow you to get the most out of your minutes.
Here are some ways I can help- clean out and organize closets, reorganize kitchen and offices, redesign bedrooms and living areas, “to do” systems, season transitioning, holiday and/or party set up, preparing a DIY booklet filled with customized solutions for your home.
